Edward Oslund Abstract Photography
I view myself not so much as a photographer, but as an abstract artist whose chosen medium is digital photography. Using the processes described below, I create images which are not of something, but complete abstractions. I refer to the results as "Abstract Photography".
Technically, they are created by a combination of thermodynamics, hydrodynamics and other processes, with some artist intervention. Because they are the result of dynamic natural processes, each image is unique and can not be reproduced even knowing all the inputs and techniques.
Most images start with a clear liquid or gel to which paint is added. The images are the result of the action of temperature and gravity or other interactions as the environment moves and mixes the paint and the liquid/gel.
All or part of the result is photographed. The final image often involves macro-photographic techniques.I then post process the image, to improve the color and composition. The impact of post processing can be extensive or minimal. Each step is influenced by my emotions and moods at the time. The same image processed on a different day often results in very different images. Some images express isolation, others conflict, or even death.
Ultimately, it is for the viewer to decide what to see in each image. I have found that most viewers see something different than I do. To avoid prejudicing the viewer's opinion, I do not title abstract images.
